Housekeeping is where guest reviews are decided and where turnover is highest. Staffing it in batches rather than one at a time.
Ask any hotel general manager which department they spend the most time staffing and the answer is housekeeping. It is the largest headcount, the highest turnover, and the department whose output guests grade publicly every single day.
Replacing one at a time never catches up
The usual pattern is to recruit reactively: someone resigns, a request goes out, and eight weeks later a replacement arrives. In the meantime the rota is covered by overtime, standards slip, and another team member becomes more likely to leave. The department is permanently one step behind.
Batch mobilisation changes the arithmetic
Recruiting four or six at once against a known annual attrition rate costs the same per head and arrives on one timeline. It also means a group who arrive together, train together, and settle together, which measurably improves retention in the first year.
Screen for the shift, not the CV
Housekeeping is physical and repetitive by design. The candidates who last are the ones who have already done a full rooms shift and know what it is. Prior hotel or serviced-building experience predicts retention far better than years of general cleaning work.
The first month decides the second year
Accommodation, a clear supervisor, and a properly explained checklist in the first four weeks do more for retention than any pay adjustment later. Employers who invest there stop having this problem; employers who do not keep recruiting the same position forever.
